Medications are the most widespread treatment for Parkinson’s (88 percent of respondents used prescription drugs in the past year) and these medications can be costly. In response to survey questions concerning health insurance or Medicare coverage, about two-thirds (67 percent) had received any reimbursement for prescription drugs.
Long-term care was both rarely used and poorly covered by insurance. Some 16 percent of the respondents reported having used home nursing care in the past year and seven percent had been in a nursing home. For both categories, less than half (46 percent and 49 percent respectively) had any kind of health insurance or Medicare coverage.
